New charging method could greatly reduce battery recharge ti

Physorg.com -- Part of the headache of having to constantly recharge batteries is not just how often they need to be charged, but also the time it takes to charge them. In a new study, researchers have proposed a charging method that could greatly reduce the charging time of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in everything from electronic devices to electric vehicles. The new method uses an additional oscillating electric field (besides the charging field) that should be capable of charging a lithium-ion battery in a fraction of the time compared with traditional methods......

This is the kind of enhancement that is going to be required to make electric work. Hopefully it won't be cost prohibitive.

With all this positive spin there must be a negative somewhere. Pun intended - it is all about economics. It is in the best interest of our overseas suppliers to keep selling us their oil as cheaply as they can. If gasoline prices "skyrocket" to the seven bucks or so a gallon that The Chosen One wants, and cap and trade sends the polluting industries overseas, then the higher cost of rapidly charged batteries may become practical to anyone left that might be able to afford them.

indeed, no one wants power plants that run off coal, and no one wants nuclear power, yet they want cheap electricity! ?

Also, batteries get weaker over time. Replacing a hybrid battery is not like replacing your regular 12-volt battery. It's 100 times more expensive.

And what would the cost of the 'new and improved' charger be over the standard one?

ə did any of you read the full story with the comments, plus the piece written by the peole who came up with the idea?
first of all, i would question the safety of applying a 25ghz field without proper shielding. this is roughly ten times the frequency of a microwave oven! certainly it will serve to heat the battery, and would likely fry the skin of anyone who happened to contact it. and while heating the battery is beneficial (ask anyone who ha brought their car battery inside when it is zero f or -18°c so it can warm up and thus be easier to charge), _over_heating it shortens its life considerably. (one of the comments to the original article discusses this.)
so, unless they have some way of isolating this energy, and limiting the effect on battery heating, i feel that this may be another great idea which is not practical.
as for lead-acid batteries using this technique, i doubt if it would work. i do remember reading about the concept of “burping” a battery while it is charging so as to release the hydrogen molecules which build up on the lead plates, but don't know if the method was ever implemented or how it was supposed to operate. ə

Hopefully it works, but the draw back for someone like me is that I live in an apartment, and simply have no access to electricity for a car.

Working on small experimental units in a lab is good. Better is working on affordable battery designs that are in service.

The efficiency of the recharge is an unanswered question. How much energy is needed for the oscillator? Once it works acceptably and can be used on bigger cells in cars, will the infrastructure allow such a fast recharge>

If it works it would help, but they will have to make the battery life last longer.

Yeah, it is what I think too. The battery lifespan can be adversely affected if not ruined, just as any other quick-charger method does. Slowly but surely, good old proverb.

Pretty interesting theory, but I'm curious how the thermal buildup of the oscillating wave will affect the batteries longevity.
