Opec calls meeting to discuss cut in output as oil price hit
Sunday, October 12, 2008
Ft.com -- Oil prices plunged below $85 a barrel yesterday, the lowest level in a year, as Opec, the oil exporting countries' cartel, called an emergency meeting to discuss reducing its crude production to halt the collapse in prices. The announcement came as crude oil futures in New York fell almost $5 to an intraday low of $84.19 a barrel, the lowest level since October 2007. In late afternoon trading in New York, oil was down $4.14 to $84.81 a barrel. The drop suggested that the market was firmly focused on the impact of the financial crisis on global economic growth and energy demand next year, rather than in the cartel's action. The cartel, which controls 40 per cent of the world's oil output, said in an unusually frank statement that it was concerned about the "deteriorating economic conditions with contagion risks" and will meet in four weeks to tackle the problem. Of course they'll cut production, but they were perfectly happy with the spigots running full bore when oil was $140. Next they be saying that they are losing money.

yeah once u have that high profit its hard to go back to just regular profit, because u know it does not take that much more money to produce oil from 5 years ago to today.

When they know they can manipulate the market and we will accept >$100 prices, why would they ever allow it to stay below that?

Do not speak of the people who deal in the substance you are addicted to so harshly, unless you are prepared to make the sacrifices needed to KICK YOUR OIL ADDICTION and seriously explore new fuels and transportation methods... Put your actions where your mouth is, or you will be answering to Middle Eastern countries who know you are an addict who will gicve up anything for a full tank!

Nuclear and Hydroelectric plants, everywhere we can build them, and to HELL with the EPA Greenie-weenies. That will give us stationary energy independence.
Develop water-electrolysis Hydrogen fuel sources for transportation. That will give us mobile energy independence.
The oil reserves we ALREADY HAVE in the ground will suffice, if we don't have to burn them as fuel, as lubricants and plastics/petrochemistry stocks, for AT LEAST 100-150 years. By that time, we will have developed fully synthetic replacements that won't need ANY petroleum.
And OPEC can go eat all their petroleum, mixed with their sand and their cocaine (from Venezuela) and their leftover tortillas (from Mexico). Or they can sell it to Japan and China and India (until we sell the nuke and Hydrogen technology to them and REALLY put OPEC out of business!).
America is STILL the class of the show, and the ONE Superpower left in the world. We don't HAVE to conquer by force of arms, and we don't need to bully people to show the way. All we need to do is make our OWN WAY, and show everyone ELSE we can do it without forcing anyone to follow us, and the SMART ones will tag along willingly; the IDIOTS can lay back in their tents and die, if they insist.
We don't NEED OPEC. We can do it alone.

In capitalism, it's a natural response to decrease the supply of a "necessity" when there's a decrease in demand in order to raise the price. Market economics at work here, folks.

Keep conserving -- and this doesn't mean fewer trips. STOP THE SPEEDING, PEOPLE! No one's impressed. Every time one of you pinwheels flies by me at 80 in your minivan, I realize you're paying $6 a gallon for the same gas I am buying for $3 right now because of your lead foot.
Try leaving earlier for once and enjoy the drive. Geez. You're not ALL brain surgeons en route to Johns Hopkins.

Discuss all you want OPEC - we will drive very high MPG vehicles, that are very reliable and have a reasonable cost..
NO SUVs, Hummers or daily driver pickups...............either.
So go ahead and talk, talk, talk - all you want……......

Don't see this meeting making much difference in the price, because half of them will not stay with their quota. They will cheat on their quota trying to make a buck before it goes lower.. Lets not stop conserving gas in any way you can, that will help more than any thing else..

Sure prices are dropping in oil. Plastics are made from oil. I work in injection molding of plastic automotive parts. Cars are not selling. We are producing half of the output of just three months ago! Also half the employees don't use gas to get to work, they are on lay-off!

Opec has a good position until prices are high enough to support developing alternate fuels and vehicles. The price now only encourages more consumption.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me see, at first they blamed the speculators for high prices and $80 was the magic number (which I think they were behind all that speculation deal any way) now they are crying when the price is close to $80.

It's called economic terrorism people.
